Of course, Hazel had been raised since birth as Filbert’s son, but he was not a Grouse by blood. King Filbert had not married since the death of the queen over twenty years ago, and with no children of his own, it was expected that his successor would come from one of the noble houses. It had been known for nearly two decades now that the sun was setting on the Grouse family’s reign. Much of that disappeared, however, on the day of Hazel’s 18th birthday-when King Filbert declared him his heir apparent. The ladies at court all but fought each other for the opportunity to dance with him, and though their fathers were all-in-all less enamored, they did grudgingly admit he would likely grow into a fine and respectable statesman someday. Though he largely kept to himself as a child, focused on his schooling, he came into his own as a teenager charming and sociable, with a reputation as a bright, witty, and talented young man. He was tutored by the finest scholars in the country, and excelled in his studies-from languages to history to diplomacy to fencing and athletics. When the poor woman passed some months later, King Filbert-a widower himself with no children to his name-came to a decision: to adopt the boy into the Grouse family and raise him as his own.Īnd so it came to be that Hazel was brought up in the royal house, with all the opportunities and limitations that brought with it. When news reached him of the Colonel’s passing, he personally visited his widow to pay his respects. Tales of his valor had reached even King Filbert’s ear, and he’d even met the man a handful of times while visiting their encampments.

Hazel’s late father was of common birth, but he had built up a reputation as a war hero-a decorated soldier who worked his way up through the ranks and commanded immense respect and loyalty from his troops. It was, in a remarkable twist of good luck, the Grouse royal family itself which gave Hazel a way out. Born to a mother who died in childbirth, with a father who had died on the battlefield before even knowing his wife was with child, he had no family to care for him and no prospects for an education or future beyond what one of the nation’s church-run orphanages could provide.
